Proverbs 6:16-19
New International Version (NIV)
16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Notice that the 1st thing listed in this scripture is “haughty eyes” also known as a spirit of pride. Haughtiness (Spirit of pride) is defined as being arrogant, disdainful, overbearing, swaggering and obnoxious. Most people with a spirit of pride usually have a big attitude and feel they’re better than others. This isn’t to be confused with being proud of your accomplishments. A spirit of pride is resistant to anything that will help it.
Why does God hate the spirit of pride? This spirit says you don’t need God and tends to want to exalt itself above God. It was because of this spirit that God cut down Lucifer (the devil). The devil used to be in charge of the heavenly choir and was even called “Son of the morning star” in the Bible but when the spirit of pride entered in, he decided that he was going to exalt himself above God and the Lord wasn’t having it.
Isaiah 14 :12-15
(New International Version)
12 How you have fallen from heaven,
morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart,
“I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.[b]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.”
15 But you are brought down to the realm of the dead,
to the depths of the pit.
Proverbs 3:34 says God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. Don’t become and enemy of God because you’ve allowed this spirit to prevail in your life. Examine your heart today and repent so you don’t end up as it says in Proverbs 16:18 …”Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
